One of the Sabbath laws derived from the Torah is a prohibition against carrying of objects in public places. An eruv is a symbolic enclosure that surrounds the Jewish community so that it is considered as if a single property which enables carrying on the Sabbath within the eruv. In its absence, carrying children or using strollers, wheelchairs, walkers, crutches or canes is prohibited. An eruv not only enhances the quality of life in the Jewish community, but also makes the community much more attractive to those considering relocating to a new community.
